Laid down by Arsenal de Brest on 26 July 1882, launched on 26 May 1884, commissioned on 17 January 1887, decommissioned on 13 August 1905, stricken in 1906 and scrapped. Her design goes back to designs from French naval engineer Louis-Émile Bertin (23 March 1840 Nancy, France-22 October 1924 La Glacerie, Manche, France) dated 1870 respectively 1873 for a ironclad river monitor and a small cruiser, both never realized and finally by Bertin for his 1881 approved design for a protected cruiser and in 1882 ordered design in stead of the new building of the unprotected cruiser Capitane Lucas.
Barque-rigged. Displacement 4,888 tons and as dimensions 96.08 (over all) x 15 x 6.77 metres or 315.3 x 49.3 x 2.3 feet. The propulsion consisted of 2 compound steam engines and 12 fire-tube boilers supplying 6,495 ihp via 2 screws aloowing a speed of 16.71 knots and a range of 4,200 nautical miles/10.5 knots. Crew numbered470 men. Armour consisted of 1-3cm/1.2” thick deck with the conning tower and sponsons protected by 3cm/1.2” respectively 0.8cm/0.31”. Armament consisted of 6x1-16.4cm/6.5” guns, 10x1-13.8cm/5.4” guns, 8x1-3.7cm/1.5” guns and 5x1-35.6cm/14” torpedo tubes.
