Japanese possible preparing landing on New Guinea according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 15 August 1942

An item reported that Japanese launches were sighted on the Mambare river, 50 miles north west of Buna, [Papua] New Guinea possible for a landing. A Japanese convoy of 4 transports, 2 destroyers, 1 cruisers and gunboat was attacked without success by Allied bombers. The Japanese lost just 1-3 fighters and 4 more were damaged.
