German cruiser 2nd class Irene visited Sabang, Dutch East Indies in 1900

The Jaarboek van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Zeemacht 1900-1901 reported that the German cruiser 2nd class Irene visited Sabang, Dutch East Indies between 16-19 July 1900. The Dutch newspaper De locomotief dated 25 June reported that she was part of the German squadron in the Far East and on 12 June guard ship at Tsingtao, China.

Notes

1. Part of Irene-class protected cruisers, succeeded by Kaiserin Augusta, laid down by AG Vulcan Stettin, Stettin, Germany in 1886, launched on 23 July 1887, commissioned on 25 May 1888, classified as submarine depot ship in 1914, stricken on 17 February 1914 and broken up in 1922.

2. The coal bunker station at Sabang was used by Dutch and foreign war and merchant ships.
