An item reported that 20% (400 out of the 2,000 vessels) of the Mexican shrimp fleet was 50 years old and with a lenth less than 19 metres/62 feet. Just below the 10% or 200 vessels was fully adequate. The aged vessels were partly to blaim the industry’s inefficieny and 2/3 as many new vessels could catch as much shrimp as all old vessels. Local shipyards were able to replace the old vessels by new one. This could be done within 10 years including vessels fishing on other species like tuna. The financing of this plan was yet still an issue.
