Japanese naval force occupied Christmas Island according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 3 April 1942

An item reported that in the night of 30-31 March Christmas Island was occupied by the Japanese with 3 light cruisers, 4 destroyers and 2 transports. The flagship of this force was claimed to but by a torpedo of an Allied submarine.(1)

Note

1. The flagship of rear admiral Shōji Nishimura was the Naka part of the Sendai-class preceded by Nagara-class succeeded by Agano-class, the Naka was 1 April heavily damaged by one torpedo of the American submarine USS Seawolf SS-197and towed to the Bantam Bay, Java, Dutch East Indies by the Natori.
