According to French newspapers there had been recently a fight at Mahon between crewmembers of the French brig le Faune (1) and the American frigate Java.(2) Some drunker American sailors fought with a number of French sailors but were lost. After getting reinforcements they attacked the French men again which on their return lost and been heavily beaten. The French commanding officer sends a lieutenant to the fighting scene but when he arrived a hail of stones killed him. Unless some other newspapers the Moniteur made clear that the American commanding officer was really shocked and he handed over the guilty ones to the court at Mahon.
