American side-wheel steam ironclad CSS Nashville 1863-1865 (1867)



She was laid down in September 1862 and mid 1863 launched by the Confederate States Navy at Montgomery, Alabama and from there brought to Mobile, Alabama to be completed, for instance with armour plates originally belonged to the CC Baltic. Despite being incomplete commissioned on 15 September 1864 and captured by the Union forces on 10 May 1865 still not finished. Although commissioned after the Civil War as the USS Nashville she was never completed and in November 1867 sold at New Orleans to be broken up. Her amour was hover already for the sell removed by the navy.

Her displacement was estimated to be around 1,100 tons with as dimensions 271’ x 62’6” x 10’9”. The armament consisted of 3-7” Brooke rifles and 1-24pdr howitzer. The armour consisted of triple 2”plates forward and around the pilothouse while the aft ships just was protected by single plates. After being captured she was surveyed by the Union navy and discovered that she was hogged probably by a too large weight of her armour.
