The British naval base at Singapore according to the Dutch newspaper De Sumatra Post dated 11 November 1929

Singapore, 3 September. The governor discussed in the Legislative Council the proposal to approve a credit of 50,000 dollars needed as the first payment for buying ground on behalf of the naval base which ground was to be offered by the colony to the admiralty. When him was asked why this gift was kept secret the governor answered that this was caused by the confidential character of the negotiations. Further more the colony was not independent in her own affairs in case of the naval policy of the empire.
