Privateer of the Independents cruising off Bilbao, Spain according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 15 August 1818

Bilbao, 30 July. A privateer of the Independents was at the moment cruising between St. Andero and Bilbao. He captured a vessel coming from La Guayra, Venezuela loaded with 1,200 fanages of cacao of Caraques. His intention to take away in the night of 25-26 July a vessel destined towards Lima, Peru out of the harbour of St. Andero failed.(1) Although the privateer temporarily possessed it was he forced to retreat when from land men came to join the crew of the vessel. The privateer seemed to be aware of the money transports of so-called crones of 3 livres between Bayonne, France and Bilbao, Spain while they were awaiting the vessels of this coastal trade. Yesterday was off St. Sebastian a Spanish vessel captured with on board more as 200,000 francs in these crones. The privateer was armed with 32 guns and her crew numbered 180 men

1. According to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 19 August 1818 was that the los Tres Hermanos master Mello although now was reported that the failed attack was on 24 July.
