An item reported that in the harbour of Brooklyn the British transport Egremont Castle exploded causing the death of five sailors and heavily wounding another eight. She sunk in the East River. The disaster was caused by the explosion of the 200,000 galloons of gaseous NAFTA (gasoline) with which she was loaded. The newspaper Hawera&Normanby Star of 30 June wrote that this freighter was loaded with ‘100,000 gallons of the highest quality airplane gasoline, 100,00 gallons of naphtha, and a large quantity of motor oil. ’
