Dutch frigates to be fitted out with Smart-L radars

The Dutch press office ANP announced today that according to the Dutch minister of defence Hans Hillen the first Dutch warship equipped for the new NATO missile shield would be available in 2018. He said this on the first day of the NATO-meeting at Chicago, USA. The Netherlands are the first European country to fit out her four air defence and command frigates (the LCF’s) with a special radar namely the SMART-L. This radar made it possible to detect ballistic missiles in an early stadium. The minister also stated that Europe could not depend always solely for her defence on the USA.
