British Indies Government ordered building of a large troop transport according to the Dutch newspaper Het nieuws van den dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië dated 7 October 1905

An item reported that the British Indies government ordered the building at the Clyde of a new transport of 5,820 tons special designed to serve in shallow waters so with a maximum draught of just 18’.
