The freighter Janssens had accommodation for 24 passengers (12-1st and 12-2nd class) . Her building was ordered on 3 March 1902, the keel was laid down on 16 May on the South slipway, in the thrusses on 1 August, plating fitted on 17 September and launched on 25 October by Jacques Janssen. Capacity 1.265 gross and 774 net tons of 2,83 cubic metres and a loading capacity 1.140 tons including bunker capacity of 1,016 kg and a bunker capacity of 133 tons of 1,016 kg, call sign THWJ. Call sign TJHB, homeport Batavia, net capacity 2189,72 cubic metres or 773,75 tons of 2,83 cubic metres. The newspaper De Sumatra Post dated 28 July 1902 reported her successful launching on 2 July at the yard of the Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij at Amsterdam for the Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij. This was the tenth ship this shipyard build for this shipping company. Her engines were manufactured by the Dutch fabriek van werktuigen en spoorwegmaterieel at Amsterdam. She was complete similar to the Gouverneur-Generaal Daendels which was launched at the same shipyard on 21 May and which trials were to be on 15 July.
