French losses according in the First World War to the Dutch newspaper Nieuwsblad van het Noorden dated 31 July 1916

An item reported that since Germany on 18 February 1915 announced to start her unrestricted submarine warfare the German-Austrian submarines destroyed at least 1.000 ships belonging to her enemy (the Entente) and to neutral countries. The result was that the USA entered the war 6 April 1917 as opponents of Germany because of this submarine warfare.

In the period between 18 February 1915 and 31 July 1916 lost France 74 ships consisting of 43 steamships (including one Tunisian) and 13 sailing vessels. The navy lost three trawlers, three transports, three submarines, two cruisers, five auxiliary cruisers, two torpedo boats and one destroyer. The French ship Portugal served as a Russian Red Cross ship when she was torpedoed.
