Canadian minesweeper Comox (J64) 1938-1946


Sister ships were the Fundy, Gaspé and Nanoose (former Nootka). Their design was similar to the British trawler minesweeper HMS Basset although that the Canadian ships of the steel built Fundy-class were ice-strengthened. Her building was ordered on 23 August 1937, laid down at the shipyard of the Burrard Dry Dock Co. at North Vancouver, B.C. on 5 February a year later, launched on 9 August and commissioned on 23 November. Decommissioned on 27 July 1945 was she to China where she became the tugboat Sung Ming and finally broken up in 1993. With a displacement of 460 long tons/520 short tons-696 (full load) tons were the dimensions 150 x 27½ x 10½ feet (Jane‘s fighting ships) or 163 x 27.5 x 14.5 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMCS_Comox_(J64)). The triple expansion engines supplied 950 ihp allowing a speed of 12-12.5 knots. She had a coal bunker capacity of 180 tons. The crew numbered 33-38 men and the armament consisted of 1-4” gun.
