An item referred to the magazine Schiffbau dated 26 May 1920 reporting that the aged battleship USS Iowa was to be converted into a movable target for the modern battleships. She could be wireless controlled from a large distance.(1)

Laid down on 5 August 1893 at the shipyard of William Cramp&Sons Shipbuilding Company at Philadelphia, launched on 28 March 1896, commissioned on 16 June 1897, renamed on 30 April 1919 Coast Battleship No. 4 was she finally sunk while used a target by the USS Mississippi on 23 March 1923 in the Gulf of Panama.
