Soviet Union building new cruisers according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1939 no. 8

Maxim Gorky

An item referred to the magazine Marine Rundschau dated May 1939 reporting that the Soviet Union was building 3-8.000 ton cruisers called Maxim Gorki, Ordjonikidze and Kribishew.(1) The first ship executed her trials in autumn 1938, the second one was to be launched in the summer and the third one was still on stocks. Probably were these three cruisers similar to the Kirow commissioned in 1938. A second series of three similar although slightly larger cruisers were soon to be laid down.

Note
1. The Kirov-class the so-called Project 26, 26bis and 26bis2 consisted of 6 cruisers called Kirov, Voroshilov, Maxim Gorky, Molotov, Kalinin and Kaganovich. While for the last four ships the armour was strengthened are they sometimes indicated as belonging to the Maxim Gorky-class. For this class was the Italian light cruiser Raimondo Montecuccoli-design used and engineers of the Italian shipbuilding company Ansaldo assisted during the building.
