London, 30 December 1825.The Lloyd’s agent at Constantinople warned 25
November 1825 that ships hadn’t to pass the fortress at the Dardanelles by
night or even by daylight without any investigation. There had already some
times nearly been shot at ships. Also the masters of the ships needed better
charts to prevent grounded on the sand-banks. A third danger was the increasing
number of pirates in the Archipelago, although the ships flying British colours
until now escaped from being captured.
Madrid, 19 December. Tidings from Gibraltar came with disastrous news
dealing with the hurricane and which caused many lives and ships. The whole
crew of a Columbian privateer, suspected to be the el General Sobletto, was
wrecked and captured by the Spanish.
