The French and the Turkish navies in the Mediterranean according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 5 September 1837

According to the Government morning newspaper decided the French government to continue their actions against Constantine. There was still not an agreement with Achmet-bey dealing with the reign over Algiers. Achmet suddenly changed his opinions probably while he heard of the departure of the Turkish fleet from Constantinople towards Tunis. He expected presumably that this fleet had soldiers and arms for him on board. The French government send the squadrons commanded by the admirals Gallois and Lalande to sea with the orders to demand the return of the Turkish fleet and to use if necessary violence to obtain this target. The Turkish fleet commanded by the Kapudan pasha existed of 3 ships of the line, 3 frigates and 6 corvettes.
