The Portuguese and Spanish navies versus the privateers of the Independents according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 25 July 1818

London, 21 July. According to tidings of Cadiz dated 20 June reported the commanding officer of the Spanish brig Carmen that between Faro and Cape St. Vince 4 schooners, 2 brigs and 1 schooner brig were cruising all with the Independents flag hoisted. He was several times pursued by these privateers and had to seek shelter under the coast batteries. A cruiser of the Portuguese Customs service captured 11 June one mile distance of Lagos a boat with 7 armed men. He saw himself 19 June by sunrise off Salmedina near Basses a frigate of 40 or 44 guns sailing towards a schooner on a distance of 2 miles and both ships joined going westwards. The same frigate pursued him 6 June until Cape St. Vincent. According to a report received by the governor of Lagos coming from Chagres captured these vessels 6 ships while burning another 2 north of Cape St. Vincent and a third one south of the same cape. The San Antonio master Fontanie loaded with wine etc. was plundered on 3 June by a schooner off Ayamonte but allowed to continue their voyage and the same happened to the Santa Lucia master Zublaga.
