The French and Turkish navies in the Mediterranean according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 27 July 1838

According to the news item dated Constantinople 4 July published in the newspaper Allgemeine Zeitung were on board of the Turkish fleet which departed 2 July 2.000 men landing troops taken on board making a total of 5.000 men. The French admiral Roussin didn’t trust the explanations of the Turkish Porte dealing with the destination of this fleet and ordered admiral Gallois to watch all Turkish movements. The French squadron consisting of the ships of the line Jupiter (1), Sant-Petri (2), Triton (3) and Trident (4) and some smaller vessels arrived 28 June off Smyrna coming from Alexandria. She was ordered to sail the 1st towards the Dardanelles and to ‘accompany’ all time the Turkish fleet. Although the Porte first intended to complain dealing with this following, there came no actual Turkish reaction.
