Frankfurt, 4 May. The Augsburg’s Algemeine Zeitung dated 3 May published
tidings coming from Trieste
dated 24 April. These tidings referred to letters of Alexandria, dated 9 March. In the latter town
it was expected, how unbelievable that seemed that the Pasha of Egypt was to
command the Turkish fleet. A traveller which arrived by ship coming from Malta
at Alexandria said 4 March that he saw off Candia a frigate and 6 other ships,
perhaps Greeks, waiting for the newly built ships for the Pasha in Europe. News
from Constantinople dated 14 May acknowledged the news that the Pasha of Egypt
was to command the Turkish fleet as soon as she had left the Dardanelles.
