British light cruiser HMS Birmingham 1913-1931

This is an original German glass negative dealing with the First World War

Of the Town-class cruisers with being the lead ship of the so-called Birmingham group. Her building was ordered under the 1911 Naval Estimates and she was laid down at the shipyard of Armstrong Whitworth, Elswich, United Kingdom on 10 June 1912, followed by her launching on 7 May 1913 and her commissioning in February 1914. On 9 August destroyed she the German submarine U-15. In 1931 sold and finally broken up at the yards of Ward, Pembroke Dock. With a displacement of 5.440-5,530 tons were her dimensions 139,3 (over all) x 15,2 x 4,80 metres or 457’x 50’x 15’9”, The horsepower of 25.000 ship supplied by 4 Parsons steam turbines and 12 Yarrow boilers allowed a speed of 25,5 knots or with a speed of 10 knots a range pf 4.680 nautical miles. She was slightly armoured at the ends 1,75” and amidships 3”. The armament consisted of 9-6”/15,2cm guns, 1-3”/7,6cm anti aircraft gun, 4-3pd guns, 2 machines and 2-21”/53.3cm torpedo tubes.
