The Algerian and Turkish navies in the Mediterranean according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 2 June 1823

Livorno, 13 May. The captain of an Algerian warship while walking in Alexandria offended a European was hit with a stick by the same European and complained by the kadi. In fact his complaints were ignored and the governor ordered the immediate departure of the 6 Algerian warships lying in the port. The result was that the Algerians harassed every vessel they saw, capturing a ship destined towards Syra loaded with corn and hanging an Italian and a Greek sailor, both belonging to the crew of a British ship up.
