American Norman Bel Geddes Whale liners 1932



Norman Melancton Bel Geddes (27 April 1893 Adrian, Michigan, USA-8 May 1958 New York, USA), nicknamed Big Norm, an American theatrical and industrial designer. Started with an industrial design studio back in 1927 . One of his designs was what was called the Airline Number 4, which was a 9-deck amphibian airline. On board were two airplane-hangars, but also an orchestra, a solarium and an gymnasium, In 1932 he published his book Horizons influencing other designers in the thirties. His never realized ocean liner had a displacement pf 81.961 tons, a gross tonnage of 81.237 tons and as dimensions 294,1 (between perpendiculars)-310,7 (over all) x 36,0 x 11,9 x 55,2 (height) metres or 965-1.019.4 x 118 x 39 x 181 feet. The crew was to number 1.101 men with a passenger accommodation for 2.139 persons. The 4 sets Parsons single-reduction geared steam turbines and 24 Yarrow boilers supplied via 4 shaft totally 160.000 ship allowing a cruising speed of 28,5 knots.
