British submarine HMS Acheron (P411/S61) 1944-1972

Of the Amphion-class A-class patrol submarines. Laid down on 26 August 1944 at the HM Dockyard, Chatham, England, launched on 25 March 1947 and completed a year later. In the years 1964-1966 loaned to the Canadian navy for 2 years. Finally she was decommissioned in February 1971 and a year later broken up at the ship breaking location of John Cashmore Ltd., Newport, Monmouthshire, England. Displacement 13.85 (surfaced)-1.620 (submerged) tonnes and as dimensions 221’ x 22’ x 17’. Speed 8 (submerged)-18 (surfaced) knots. Her crew numbered 61 men. The armament consisted of 1-4” quick firing guns which was later removed and 12-21” (6 bow, 2 amidships and 4 stern) torpedo tubes. She was during the Cold War at Portsmouth rebuilt included a new bow, casing and a taller fin and a lengthening with 14’.
