Outdated Turkish navy needed to be modernized according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1909-1910 no. 3


Central battery ironclad Mesudiye laid down at Thames Iron Works in 1872 and sunk when torpedoed by British submarine B-11 on 13 December 1914.


Ironclad Asar-I-Tevfik laid down at Société Nouvelle des Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée, La Seyne, France in 1867 and wrecked off Cernes on 11 February 1913.

An item reported that the British vice admiral Gamble (1) was appointed to reorganize the Turkish fleet. He was paid 3.000 pound. The fleet was neglected and for the major part. Of the 11 ironclads was the youngest- the Hamidije- launched in 1883. The others were launched between 1863-1874 although some were since then rebuilt at European shipyards.
