Spanish government buying Italian Giuseppe Garibaldi-class cruisers according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1896-1897 no. 7

An item referred to the Marine Rundschau reporting that the Spanish cabinet decided to buy two cruisers being built by Ansaldo, Genoa, Italy. The Mittheilungen aus dem Gebiete des Seewesens reported that the Garibaldi-design cruiser launched on 10 September [1896] was named Cristobal Colon (1), the other was to be named Pedro d’Aragon.(2)

1. Laid down by Gio. Ansaldo&co., Genoa-Sestri-Ponente, Italy in 1895 as the Giuseppe Garibaldi was she delivered to Spain on 16 May 1897. She sunk on 3 July 1898 during the Battle of Santiago de Cuba against the US Navy.
