Italian navy converted aged battleships into floating coastal batteries according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1913-1914 no. 5

An item referred to the magazine Le Yacht dated 2 August reporting that the Italian navy intended to convert some aged battleships into floating coastal batteries. The ironclad Italia (1) was now converted at Tarente. The old 43cm Armstrong guns were replaced by more modern smaller quick firing guns.

1. Laid down at the Regio Cantiere di Castellammare di Stabia on 3 January 1876, launched on 29 September 1880, completed on 16 October 1885, floating battery at Brindisi on 1914, converted into a grain carrier December 1917-June 1918 and stricken on 16 November 1921. Her original main armament consisted of 2x2-43,2cm/17” guns.
