Several firms interested in building coastal submarines for US Navy according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1915-1916 no. 4
An item referred to the magazine Schiffbau reporting that several firms were interested in building 16 coastal submarines for the US Navy, namely the Electric Boat Company, Lake Torpedoboat Company, Newport News Shipbuilding Company, New York Shipbuilding Company, Union Iron Works and California Shipbuilding Company. Union Iron Work was using Electric Boat Company designs, California Shipbuilding Company designs of the Lake Torpedoboat Company while the Newport News Shipbuilding Company and New York Shipbuilding Company used Hay-Denny designs. Building costs for a submarine varied between 1,2 and 1,3 million Dutch guilders and the building time between 17-25 months.
