British battle cruiser HMS Tiger 1912-1932


Building ordered under the 1911-1912 Naval Programme. Laid down at John Brown and Company, Clydebank, Scotland on 20 June 1912, launched on 10 December 1913, commissioned on 3 October 1914, in reserve since 22 August 1921, refitted in 1922, decommissioned on 14 February 1924. decommissioned at Rosyth, Scotland on 15 May 1931 and sold to Thos W. Ward, Inverkeithing be broken up in February 1932. Building costs included her armament 2.593.100 pond sterling.

Displacement 29.000 (normal)-33.790 (deep load) tons and as dimensions 214,6 (over all) x 27,6 x 9,9 metres or 704 x 90.6 x 32.5 feet. The two Brown-Curtiss direct drive steam turbine sets and 39 Babcock&Wilcox water tube boilers supplied 85.000 (design)-104.635 (trials)-108.000 (forced) shp via 4 shafts allowing a speed of 28 (design)-29 (trials) knots. Coal bunker capacity 3.390 tons and fuel oil capacity 3.900 tons. With a daily fuel consumption of 1.265 tons and a speed of 24 knots was the range 3.300 nautical miles. Crew numbered 1.112 (1914)-1.459 (1918) men. Armour consisted of a 7,6-22,9cm/3-9” thick belt, 2,5-7,6cm/1-3” thick decks, 10,2cm/4” thick bulkheads and the turrets, barbettes, casemates and conning tower protected by respectively 22,9cm/9”, 20,3-22,9cm/8-9”, 15,2cm/6”and 25,4cm/10”. Armament consisted of 4x2-34,3cm/13.5” /45 Mk V guns, 12x1-15,2cm/6” Mk VII breech loading guns in casemates, 2x1-7,6cm/3” anti aircraft guns and 4-53,3cm/21” submerged torpedo tubes.
