The new Japanese battleship Mutsu according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1920 no. 5

American Colorado-class

An item reported the launching on 31 March at Yokosuka, Japan of the Japanese battleship Mutsu (1), a sister ship of the in end 1919 launched Nagato. The Mutsu was compared with the American USS Maryland.(2) The Mutsu had a normal displacement of 34.300 tons and as dimensions 201,46 x 28,85 x 9,14 metres. Her speed was 23,25 miles and her main armament 8-40,6cm L/45 guns. The figures for the Maryland were 33.100 tons and 190,18 x 29,64 x 9,30 metres, 21 miles and the same main armament.

1. Of the Nagato-class consisting of the Nagato and the Mutsu, precede by the Ise-class and succeeded by the Tosa-class. Laid down at the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal on 1 June 1918, launched on 31 May 1920, commissioned on 24 October 1921 and finally sunk in the Hashirakima fleet anchorage caused by an internal explosion on 8 June 1943.

Building ordered in 5 December 1916, laid down by Newport News Shipbuilding, Newport News, Virginia, USA on 24 April 1917, launched on 20 March 1920, commissioned on 21 July 1921, damaged during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on 7 December 1942, decommissioned on 3 April 1947 and sold to be broken up on 8 July 1959. Nicknamed Old Mary and Fighting Mary. Of the Colorado-class consisting of the Colorado, Maryland, West Virginia and Washington preceded by the Tennessee-class and succeeded by the South Dakota and North Carolina-classes.
