Trials of American aircraft carrier USS Yorktown failure according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1937 no. 6

An item referred to the magazine le Yacht dated 4 September 1937 reporting that the trials of the American aircraft carrier Yorktown (1) were no success, especially the transmission caused problems. It was expected that the building time was expanded with a year. The necessary modifications on board of the Yorktown were also to be executed on board of the Enterprise.(2)

1. The CV-5, laid down at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Norfolk, Virginia, USA on 3 August 1933, launched on 21 May 1934, commissioned on 30 September 1937 and sunk after she was heavily damaged by Japanese aircraft in the Battle of Midway on 7 June 1942. Of the Yorktown-class consisting of the Yorktown, Enterprise and Hornet, preceded by the USS Ranger and succeeded by the USS Wasp and the Essex-class.
2. The CV-6, building ordered in 1933, laid down by Newport News Shipbuilding, Newport News, Virginia, USA on 16 July 1934, launched on 3 October 1936, commissioned on 12 May 1938, decommissioned on 17 February 1947 and finally sold to the Lipsett Corporation, New York City to be broken up at Kearny, New Jersey, USA. Of the Yorktown-class consisting of the Yorktown, Enterprise and Hornet, preceded by the USS Ranger and succeeded by the USS Wasp and the Essex-class.
