The Bulgarian motor torpedo boats according to a CIA report dated 13 November 1952

An item reported that the Bulgarian had several motor torpedo boats of various types and dimensions in service. There were around 20 motor torpedo boats added to the destroyer flotilla which included the sole Bulgarian destroyer Georgi Dimitrov. The motor torpedo boats were divided over 2 squadrons of 3 companies each of 3 platoons with each platoon numbering 3 sections. Apparently a third squadron was planned. Another schema reported except for the destroyer 1 squadron of 18 boats, 1 squadron of 3 ships and 1 squadron planned.

There were 6 SovietTM-200 class boats built at Ochakov, USSR [=Ukraine] and handed over in 1950. With a displacement of 45 tons. With a machinery consisting of 3-1.200hp engines was the speed of 30 knots. Crew numbered 12 men. With an armament consisting of 1-4cm machinegun, some anti aircraft machineguns , sided torpedo tubes for which 2 reserve torpedoes were available and 6 small and 2 heavy depth charges.

There were 4 boats of the Dutch Gusto shipyard type built in 1942 and with a displacement of 65 tons. Crew numbered 25 men. Armament consisted of 1-4cm machinegun and 2 torpedo tubes. The three Mercedes Benz-engines supplied 2.850hp allowing a speed of 30 knots.(1)

There were three Lürssen boats built between 1938-1942 with a displacement of 60 tons and as dimensions 28 x 4,3 x 1,6 metres. The armament consisted of 1 anti aircraft machinegun and 2-53,3cm torpedo tubes. The three Mercedes-Benz engines supplied 3.150hp allowiug a speed of 30 knots.

Finally there were around ten boats probably also of the Soviet TM-200 class handed over by the USSR and usually stationed in the military part of Ochakov.

1. The shipyard Gusto, Schiedam, Netherlands was ordered to built a number of torpedo motor boats for the Royal Netherlands Navy numbered TM 52-61 based on the British built Hr.Ms. TM 51. Displacement 32 tons and as dimensions 23,34 x 6,10 x 1,40 metres. Fitted out with 3-1.100 ahp 2 Rolls Royce engines was the speed to be 45 knots. Design armament was 4-45cm torpedo tubes, 2-2cm Hispano Suiza machineguns in dooms and 2-2cm machineguns. In May 1940 were the boats captured by the Germans and their machinery replaced by German engines. The TM 52 and 53 which were nearly completed were handed over to Bulgarian and there commissioned as the S 201 and 202.
