Japanese tanker (Shoho Maru 1928-1939) Syoyo Maru 1939-1943


Built by Yokohama Dock Co. Ltd., Yokohama, Japan in March 1928 and sunk by the American submarine USS Trigger (SS-237) a 100 miles north west of Keelung, Taiwan on 21 September 1943.(1) Of the Nippon Tanker K.K., Tokyo, Japan. Gross tonnage 7.499 ton, underdeck 6.923 tons, net tonnage 4.509 tons, deadweight 11.531 tons and as dimensions 430.6 x 57.7 x 34.5 x 8.6 (light)-28 (loaded) feet. Call sign JQKB. Speed 11 (normal cruising)-23,5 (maximum) knots. Reciprocating machinery. With a speed of 11 knots and a fuel oil bunker capacity of 1.920 tons was her speed 17.000 miles. Oil carrying capacity of 75.500 barrels (of 42 galleons). Fitted out with 13 watertight bulkheads and 9 to upper deck. Probably armed with 12,7cm/5” guns on the forecastle and the poop.

1. Gato-class. Laid down by Mare Island Naval Shipyard on 1 February 1941, launched on 22 October 1941, commissioned on 31 January 1942 and sunk by Japanese in the East China Sea on 28 March 1945.
