German crews demolishing their ships in Brazilian harbours according to the Dutch newspaper Middelburgsche courant dated 18 April 1917

An item referred to a telegram received from Brazil reporting that naval forces seized the German merchant ships lying at Rio de Janeiro. An official investigation proved that the machinery was damaged with the use of sulphuric acid. From other Brazilian harbours was nothing especially reported except for Pernambuco. There were large German ships lying of which especially the Blucher was sabotaged by her own crew. A strong naval detachment was responsible for the seizure. At Santos were the ships also made useless by the crews. Customs officials intercepted German sailors which took engine parts from board.
