The Norwegian Icelandic whaling out of Tønsberg in 1890

In his report wrote the British consular-Agent Monsen at Tønsberg that 7 steam whalers were active off the Iceland coast and which caught around 200 whalers including 7 North Cape whales.(1) The latter species wasn’t caught for years and thought to be extincted. Bones of North Capers was very valuable and sold last year for around 1.500l/ton.

Note

1. The North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) nowadays still endangered. The eastern population is probably already extinct.
