The Norwegian seal hunting out of Tønsberg in 1890

In his report wrote the British consular-Agent Monsen at Tønsberg, Norway that the 25 sealing screw steamships with a total tonnage of 6.343 register tons totally caught 49.734 seals, 49 ice bears and 878 bottlenose whales. The seal oil was sold for 21l. per ton sold to the United Kingdom and Germany. The skins were sold for an average price of 5sh.6d. on a public auction at England. In fact failed the catch of young seals in 1890 while the fleet was icebound and not able to reach the destinations. One sailing steamship was chartered to convey a Danish expedition to the east coast of Greenland.
