The Norwegian Spitsbergen whaling out of Tønsberg in 1890

In his report wrote the British consular-Agent Monsen at Tønsberg that Svend Foyn (1) sent one steam whaler towards Spitsbergen accompanied by a sailing vessel to stow the blubber of the caught whales. After five weeks the latter vessel returned loaded with blubber.

Note

1. Svend Foyn (9 July 1809-30 November 1894) was the Norwegian invenor of the modern harpoon cannon and responsible for modernizing whaling and owner of several whalers.
