American whaler Niger visited Port Russell, New Zealand according to the New Zealand newspaper Daily Southern Cross dated 11 April 1874

An item reported the arrival at the port of Russell, New Zealand on 26 March of the American whaler Niger of 411 tons master Grant from whaling 540 barrels sperm oil 1.400 barrels whale oil 4.000 lbs whale bone. A second item reports that she returned with 400 barrels sperm oil since she left in November 1873 Russell and now homeward bound.(1)

Ship registers of New Bedford vol III 1866-1939. Built at Rochester in 1844, tonnage 411.69 tons and as dimensions 116.6 x 29.2 x 19.2 feet, 2 masts, 3 decks, square stern, billet head.
