The Jaarboek van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Zeemacht 1898-1899 reported that the British cruiser 3rd class HMS Phoenix visited Batavia, Dutch East Indies between 17-24 August and 8-9 September 1899. The Dutch newspaper Preanger-bode dated 18 August reported the arrival in the morning of the 17th of the British flotilla vessel at Tandjong Priok coming from Singapore commanded by lieutenant Reginald P. Cochran.

1. Of the Phoenix-clas screw steam sloops, laid down by HM Dockyard Devonport on 25 July 1894, launched on 25 April 1895, commissioned in April 1896, sunk in a typhoon at Hong Kong on 18 September 1906, salvaged and sold.
