The Italian naval air service station at Varano between 1916-191 according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1920 no. 4

An item referred to notes of a naval officer of board of a British cruiser active in the Adriatic between August 1916-October 1917. He wrote that the Italian Navy opened the naval air station at Varano early summer 1917 located on the northern shore of the east Italian coast at Mount Gargano on a distance of around 150 miles from Brindisi. Due to the isolated and unhealthy location nobody liked by the personnel to be stationed there. A nearby lagoon was responsible for the malaria which disease harassed the station to such an extent that sometimes all air work was suspended. Originally consisted the aircraft on the station of F.B.A.’s by end 1917 all replaced by newer aircraft. The aircraft stationed at Varano patrolled between Varano, Spalato and Cattaro, coast patrols on each side of Brindisi and in needed the ferry route to Valona. The aircraft stationed at Brindisie patrolled between Brindisi and Cattaro.
