American preliminary battleship design dated 13 December 1913




Design for the USS New Mexico-class (BB-40) battleships to be built under the Fiscal Year 1915.

Dimensions 615 (waterline) x 37.0 (waterline) x 30.0 feet. Block coefficient .660. Longitudinal coefficient .673.

Displacement 33.700 tons.

Hull complete with fittings 15.884 tons

Protection 9.362 tons

Steam engineering 2.550 tons

Reserve feed 2/3 supply 222 tons

Battery 1.662 tons

Ammunition and 2/3 ordnance stores 1.295 tons

Equipment and 2/3 equipment stores and outfit and 2/3 stores 1.100 tons

Oil fuel, 2/3 full supply 1.625 tons

Reciprocating steam engines allowing with 38.000 shp a maximum speed of 21 knots. Range 8.000 nautical miles/10 knots.

Armament consisted of 6x2-35,56cm/14” breech loading guns, 22-12,7cm/5” cal 51 quick firing guns and 2-21” torpedo tubes.

Armour consisted of

Main side belt with extreme width 17-4 5/8”, depth below waterline 8’ 6”, thickness 13½, 13½ and 8”.

Barbettes protected by 13” (heavy part)-4½” (light part)

Turrets protected by 18” (port)-10--9” (sides)-5” (top)-9” (rear)

Conning tower proper protected by 16”-8” (top)

Conning tower tube protected by 16” (heavy part)-6” (heavy part)

Fire control tower protected by 16”

Uptake protection thickness 13”

Total thickness protective deck 120”

Splinter deck 60&80”

Windlass not protected. Torpedo room amidships. Torpedo explosion bnd to be offset in way of torpedo room.
