Preceded by the King George V-class and succeeded by the HMS Vanguard. An enlarged improved King George V-class design, which was modified using the experiences of the ongoing Second World War experiences. There were six to be built under the 1938-1940 Naval Programs, each year two units. The Lion and Temeraire were laid down on 4 July respectively 1 June 1939 both ships were never complete and finally scrapped. The building of Conqueror was awarded in 15 August 1939 and the Thunderer scheduled for November 1939, The latter two ships were even never laid down.  

Displacement 46.800 (standard)-54.700 (deep) tons and as dimensions 430 (length of citadel)-800 (length on waterline) x 33.6 x (draught mean deep) x 55 (depth of hull) feet.

Armament 6-16” guns, 16-4.5” guns, 62-4cm guns, 6o-2cm guns and none torpedo tubes.  Horsepower 139.000 shp allowing a deep clean speed of 29 knots. Range while 6 months out of dock in tropical waters with a speed of 20 knots 6.000 nautical miles. Armour: side belt 15”-13”, horizontal 6”-4”, 1.000 lbs charge.
