An item reported that on 30 August it was believed that around 58 enemy submarines were active on the West Atlantic Ocean (from the longitude of the Azores westward). Most of the submarines were in the areas to the westward of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, the Caribbean (included the Straits of Florida) and within 1,000 miles to the east-southeastward of Trinidad. In the area to the eastward of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia were 16 submarines eastbound. Just a few of the westbound submarines were located in the past few weeks were active in the US North and middle Atlantic coastal waters.
