Chinese protected cruiser Jiyhuan also spelled as Chi(h) Yuan and Tsi-Yuan 1883-1895 and Japanese Saien 1895-1905

Laid down by AG Vulcan Stettin, Stettin, Germany on 16 January 1883, launched on 1 December 1883, completed in August 1884, commissioned on 11 June 1885, captured by Japan in the Battle of Weihaiwe on 16 March 1895, commissioned in Japanese navy as Saien and lost after striking a mine during the Battle of Port Arthur on 30 November 1904. Built or the Chinese Peiyang fleet.

Steel-built. Displacement 2,377-2,355 tons and as dimensions 71.9 x 10.5 x 5.2 metres or 236.3 x 34.5 x 15.9-17 feet. Two screws, horsepower 2,800 ihp supplied by 2 compound expansion steam engines and 2 or 4 boilers allowing a speed of 15,00 knots. Armament consisted of 2x1-21cm/8.2” cal 35 Krupp guns, 1-15cm/5.9” Krupp gun, 5 Hotchkiss guns and 4 surfaced torpedo tubes. Protected by a 7.6cm/3” thick deck, 25.4cm/10” barbettes and 5.1cm/2” gun shields. Originally fitted out with 3 masts for the the delivery voyage but the fore and mainmast were within a couple of years removed.
