British submarine HMS E-3 1911-1914

Dutch magazine De Prins dated 31 October 1914

Part of the E-class, preceded by D-class, succeeded by L-class, laid down by Vickers, Barrow-in-Furness on 27 April 1911, launched on 29 October 1912, commissioned on 29 May 1914 and torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine SM U-27 off Borkum on 18 October 1914. Displacement 676 (surfaced)-809 (submerged) tons and as dimensions 54 x 4.59 x  3.81 metres or 178 x 15.05 x 12.6 feet. Propulsion consisted of 2 Vickers diesel engines delivering 800 hp and 2 electric motors supplying 420 hp via 2 shafts allowing a speed of 15.25 (surfaced)-9.75 (submerged) knots and a range of 325 nautical miles. Endurance 24 days. Crew numbered 31 men including 3 officers. Armament consisted of 4-45cm/18” torpedo tubes (1xbow, 1xstern and 2xbeam) for which 10 torpedoes were carried
