Austro-Hungarian cruisers SMS Zenta and Kaiserin Elisabeth visited the Dutch East Indies in 1901

The Jaarboek van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Zeemacht 1900-1901 reported that the Austro-Hungarian torpedo cruiser Zenta and cruiser 2nd class Kaiserin Elisabeth visited Sabang, Dutch East Indies on 24 August 1901. The Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad dated 26 June published an item dated Vienna, Austria 25 June reporting that both ships were to return on short notice and that the Austro-Hungarin contingent at Peking, China was reduced to 100 men.

1. Part of Zenta-class protected cruisers, preceded by Kaiser Franz Joseph I class, laid down by Pola Navy Yard [nowadays Pula, Croatia] on 8 August 1896, launched on 18 August 1897, commissioned on 25 May 1899 and sunk in the battle of Antivari against the French fleet on 16 August 1914.

2. Part of Kaiser Franz Joseph I class protected cruisers, succeeded by Zenta-class, laid down at the Pola Navy Yard [nowadays Pula, Croatia] in July 1988, launched on 25 September 1890, commissioned on 24 November 1892 and scuttled at Tsingtao, China to prevent capture bu the Japanese on 2 November 1914.

3. The coal bunker station at Sabang was used by Dutch and foreign war and merchant ships.
