Building ordered in 1879, based on the Chilean Arturo Prat, laid down by Charles Mitchell&Company, Newcastle upon Tyne, England on 15 January 1880, launched on 11 November 1880, completed on 14 July 1881, commissioned on 22 November 1881 and sunk in a collision with the Jiyuan during the Battle of Yalu River on 17 September 1894. With a displacement of 1,350-1,370 tons and as dimensions 67 x 9.8 x 4.7 metres or 220 x 32 x 15.5 feet. Propulsion consisted of 1 reciprocating steam engine and 6 boilers supplying via 2 shafts 2,580-2,677 ihp allowing a speed of 16.8 knots and a range of 5,380 nautical miles/8 knots. The main armament consisted of 2x1-25.4cm/10” Armstrong Whitworth guns and 4x1-12cm/4.7” Armstrong Whitworth guns and a large number of smaller guns. Crew numbered 140 men.
