When Fiume was to hand over despite the major part of the inhabitants were Italian Gabriele d’Annunzio, Prince of Montenevoso (12 March 1863 Pescara, Italy-1 March 1938 Gardone, Italy) commandante of the Carnaro 12 September 1919-30 December 1920, seizured the town which became the independent state known as Italian Regency of Carnaro but was forced to surrender after shelling of the town by the Italian navy.
